Around the kitchen table

Filed under: Around the Kitchen Table — Jackie @ 4:49 pm

In my parents’ house, as in most houses, the kitchen was where everyone gathered, or more specifically, the kitchen table. All of our major family decisions and discussions have taken place at the table. All of our family dinners still unfold here, whether we’re serving 3 or 50. (No, the kitchen isn’t that big.) This has always been our family’s favorite gathering spot. I remember sarcastic banter being traded between siblings and family memories and stories being told and retold. When I was growing up we had a large picnic table as our dinner table. It was the only thing big enough at the time to hold all of our family members. In the 80s, my parents upgraded their kitchen and my father designed the entire new layout. It came complete with an island of his own design that featured a chair-height counter, which wrapped around three of its sides and provided ample dining space. Now that all of the children have flown the nest, my parents have removed the dining counter from the island and pushed it against one wall to be used as added cabinet space. My parents now eat dinner at a round pedestal table that seats four. Of course this relatively tiny table has done nothing to diminish the fact that this is still the center of life in the house. Now, grandchildren play there, helping Grammy and Pop-Pop make Christmas cookies, or the little ones use it as a racetrack for their Matchbox cars. So, even though it has changed quite a bit over the years, there is still plenty of life there, and it is still my favorite place in the house. Is your kitchen the center of life in your house? What fond memories do you have of being around the kitchen table?

Best Feature: One Touch Cappuccino/Latte Button

Comments: What a great machine! I worked in the coffee industry for 5 + years operating espresso machines and training baristas. It would take 6 weeks to train a barista adequately. The Z5 makes it easy for anyone to make a great cup of espresso, cappuccino or latte almost immediately. You can also make “regular” coffee, although because it is pressure brewed it tends to have less acidity, more flavor and slightly less body. I made coffee using every grinder setting and at each strength setting for a 5 ounce cup. That’s 30 different cups! Yeah, that’s a lot of caffeine, I was a little wired. The coffee ranged from what I considered weak (others thought it was somewhat strong) to a very potent cup of java. So, there is a nice range here for just about anyone’s palette. The coffee was consistently hot, brewing between 168 and 174 degrees.

The preset buttons were very easy to set up. The One Touch cappuccino/latte preset took a little longer to get the way I wanted, because the volume of frothed/ steamed milk is dispensed using a timer ( up to 120 seconds). I used 2% milk, which has a nice rich texture and froths very well. I programmed the espresso for 2 oz. at the extra strong setting and set the timer for 34 seconds of frothed milk. This made an enjoyable 16 oz. cappuccino. Again, there are enough strength settings and grinder settings to suit most tastes. This One Touch feature is awesome. It’s nice to be able to place a mug under the nozzle, press a button, walk away and return to a perfectly made drink. The One Touch for milk, water and specialty drinks are also very useful, as my wife drinks tea and the children cocoa. Because you can leave the machine on 24/7, it’s very convenient to be able to dispense hot water or hot milk any time you want. My wife loves this feature.

There are 4 other preset buttons for espresso and coffee, which is convenient but not really all that necessary. If I want just an espresso or coffee, one button would do just fine. Also, you can override any preset to change any drinks strength or amount brewed. So, in my opinion, these other presets aren’t necessary

Bottom Line: The Jura-Capresso Z5 is truly an Automatic Hot Beverage Center and easy and convenient to use. The drinks that it makes are near coffee house quality that you make at home while still in your pajamas! I figured out the cost to be approximately $0.17 per shot of espresso or 6 oz. cup of coffee (cappuccino/ latte a little more), which is cheap compared to any coffee shop. One thing that would make the machine perfect would be a cup warmer.

Favorite Recipe: I love chocolate!! I use 1 tablespoon of dark chocolate powder (sweetened) and melt into a 2 oz. espresso, then add frothed milk for an awesome mochaccino. Another favorite is what the Italians call an Affogado, which is a shot of espresso over gelato. It’s awesome!!
